You know in hindsight I think part of major problem behind RPGs and Puzzles is the battle system or random encounters. Pokemon does employ alot of puzzles but it they are more annoying than anything else. For RPG series that do employ alot of puzzles, the only ones I've played that strike out in my mind are Golden Sun and Mario RPG series where the puzzles are really well done and creative but rarely frustrating, almost like Zelda puzzles where it feels satisfying to solve and not like a chore. I mean, I don't think there's a single person who likes those temple puzzles in FFX for example. I think it's really hard to make a GOOD puzzle section that doesn't just annoy the hell out of people, since most people likely don't play RPGs for the puzzles. Why do you think that is the case? Is it because of the genre? Are you actually happy that RPGs don't have many puzzles or would you also like to see more of those? Being in a fantasy world I actually find it strange that we don't have to solve magical puzzles to enter old sealed temples or whatnot on a regular basis instead of just finding that one orb to gain access, that is hidden in random chest B in a dungeon on the other side of the continent. So, what I want to know from you more or less: Of course, on the other hand you get games like Alundra or Zelda, basically action adventures, which do exactly that. There may be some simple puzzles here and there, but they are rare and most of the time pretty easy. And it's especially weird since I am also part of the german RPG Maker community and many of the RPGs created there (or even english ones) have quite a few puzzles in them, much more than I see in any of the big commercial games, like Persona, Neptunia, Xenoblade or Mario & Luigi. I honestly can't think of another RPG, be it JRPG or West RPG, where you had several puzzle rooms per dungeon. Lufia - Curse of the Sinistrals (NDS Lufia II remake, but I haven't really played that)Īs you can see, it's basically a single game series that had a big focus on puzzle gamplay besides the usual RPG stuff. Lufia II - Rise of the Sinistrals (SNES) But aside from the mentioned Crosscode, I actually can only think of 2 (maybe 3) games where puzzles were a major gameplay mechanic: Now admittedly, I haven't played all RPGs by far and I am pretty sure most RPGs have at least one puzzle or another. I had a chat with Lachsen, one of the developers, a few days ago about that and basically we arrived at a question: It's a JRPG which has a big focus on puzzle in it's dungeon. Some of you may know of the game Crosscode, which is currently an early access title on Steam.
